Residually Finite Dimensional C*-algebras

A C*-algebra is called residually finite dimensional (RFD for brevity) if it has a separating family of finite dimensional representations. A C*-algebra A is said to be AF embeddable if there is an AF algebra B and a ∗-monomorphisms α : A→ B. In this note we discuss the question of AF embeddability of RFD algebras. Since a C*-subalgebra of a nuclear C*-algebra must be exact [Ki], the nonexact R...

Evaluation of Odd-dimensional Surgery Obstructions with Finite Fundamental Group

THROUGHOUT the decade following the publication of C.T.C. Walls book, Surgery on Compact Manifolds, there was a tremendous effort on the part of many mathematicians to compute the algebraic L-groups L,(Zn) for finite groups TL. Two noteworthy results were Bak’s theorem that Lzi+ 1 (Zrc) is zero when 7c has odd order, and Wall’s result that Lsi(Z7c) is detected by multisignatures and the classic...

Categorical Formulation of Finite-dimensional C*-algebras

We develop the concept of an involution monoid, and use it to show that finite-dimensional C*-algebras are the same as special unitary †-Frobenius monoids in the category of finite-dimensional complex Hilbert spaces. This gives a new, geometrical definition of finite-dimensional C*-algebras, contrasting with the conventional algebraic one.

Primitive Ideal Space of Ultragraph $C^*$-algebras

In this paper, we describe the primitive ideal space of the $C^*$-algebra $C^*(mathcal G)$  associated to the ultragraph $mathcal{G}$. We investigate the structure of the closed ideals of the quotient ultragraph $  C^* $-algebra  $C^*left(mathcal G/(H,S)right)$ which contain no nonzero set projections and then we characterize all non gauge-invariant primitive ideals. Our results generalize the ...

The trace on the K-theory of group C∗-algebras

The canonical trace on the reduced C∗-algebra of a discrete group gives rise to a homomorphism from the K-theory of this C∗-algebra to the real numbers. This paper studies the range of this homomorphism. For torsion free groups, the Baum-Connes conjecture together with Atiyah’s L-index theorem implies that the range consists of the integers. We give a direct and elementary proof that if G acts ...
